September 1,2018 is the end of halogen bulbs, according to the 6th stage of Regulation (EC) No 244/2009. As of this date, halogen bulbs of energy class B below (with a supply voltage * and non-directed luminous flux *) no longer correspond to European standards. After that date, and nearly 60 years of loyal service, the halogen bulb is banned.

Is it possible to buy halogen bulbs after September 1st?

Yes, after that date, you will still be able to buy and use halogen bulbs. The existing stock of suppliers and stores of halogen bulbs is still authorized for sale after September 1, the effective date of this regulation. After this date, non-directed light-emitting halogen bulbs are no longer allowed to be produced or imported into the EU.

Why halogen bulbs will disappear?

The suppression of halogen bulbs is a European decision, within the framework of the regulations in term of eco-design whose goal is to regulate the number of inefficient sources of lighting on the market. The purpose of the ban is to encourage consumers and businesses to buy LED bulbs, in order to reduce the environmental impact and carbon footprint in Europe. It is estimated that this new measure will reduce carbon emissions by 15 million tons per year.


Going to the LED allows me to reduce energy costs?

Yes, LED bulbs are more expensive than halogen bulbs when purchased, but their efficiency is much higher. LED bulbs consume up to 90% less electricity compared to halogen bulbs. On the other hand, halogen bulbs emit heat. These emissions have a negative effect in schools and offices, they warm indoor spaces. LEDs emit no heat and are therefore preferable to halogens as lighting in indoor spaces. The interest of LED is also its longer life, 15 to 20 years for LEDs against 2 years for a halogen bulb. By switching to LED, you will save energy and reduce your maintenance and consumption costs.
